SANS INTRODUCTIONS, her original burly captor she named Scowl. The other guy with the keys to the RV had a severe case of acne. She dubbed him Zit.

Zit brought a late lunch of what looked like a cold burrito and a can of Shasta cola.

She examined the burrito. “What is it?”

“Quinoa and chickpea wrap,” he said.

“You guys are vegan?”

He responded with a blank stare before stepping out the door.

“Wait. Thank you. How long do I have to stay inside? It’s kind of cramped in here.”

“Until you’re told otherwise.”

She ate while pacing the length of the vehicle. Salty, with too much egg-free mayo.

The bed in the back room featured a pile of dirty clothes for both men and women, ranging all sizes. Ashtrays were tucked everywhere, with cigarette butts and roach clips. Beer bottles and cans, too.

Black mildew streaks ran down the walls. The swamp cooler mounted on the vinyl ceiling above the kitchenette sagged.

Amazingly, the fridge worked, as did the propane stove. The lights, no doubt on a dying truck battery, burned dimly. She shut them off in case she needed them later.

She settled into the driver’s seat and examined the console. A key was in the ignition. No way the thing would run, considering the tires, but she turned it for good measure. The engine whirred loudly. The RV shook as if convulsing. She set the key back to its original position and rose in time to see Scowl burst in through the door.

“What are you doing?”

“Checking to see if there’s any way to get the air on in this thing. It’s stuffy in here.”

“Cooler’s broken. Don’t do that again or I’ll take the key. You’ll have to stay in the dark.”

She raised her hands in surrender. “Fair enough. I won’t. Is Ash around?”

He ducked back outside.

“Tell her I want to see her,” she called as the door slammed.
